Start with the journey, not a single best month

Tanzania’s mountains, northern parks, southern landscapes and coastline do not share one perfect calendar. These broad seasonal notes are a starting point; your route, activity and tolerance for rain should guide the final choice.

January–March

Southern Serengeti and Ndutu are commonly considered for calving-season trips. January and February can also appeal for mountain travel. Rainfall and wildlife movements vary, and conditions may become wetter toward March.

April–May

The long rains often bring greener landscapes to northern Tanzania. Some camps close seasonally and road access can be more difficult. Check opening dates and build flexibility into transfers rather than assuming all routes remain available.

June–October

Typically a drier period across much of the northern circuit, often favored for wildlife viewing around reliable water sources and for mountain journeys. Popular camps and routes can be busy. Cool mornings and highland nights still call for warm layers.

November–December

Short rains commonly return to northern areas, with fresh vegetation and changing wildlife movements. Timing and intensity vary. Southern parks and coastal conditions should be checked separately.
