Check your nationality and passport type
Tanzania’s entry requirements vary. Some travelers need a visa and some nationalities require advance referral approval. Visa-on-arrival eligibility is not universal. Read Tanzania Immigration’s current requirements before making non-refundable arrangements.
Prepare your documents
Official visa guidelines require at least six months’ passport validity and one unused visa page. Visitors must present a return ticket on arrival. Confirm the requirements for your nationality and ensure your dates and accommodation information match your application.
Use the official application portal
Apply through Tanzania Immigration’s official eVisa portal when appropriate. Fees, processing requirements and eligibility can change. Visa approval does not itself guarantee entry; immigration authorities make the entry decision.
If Zanzibar is part of your trip
The Tanzania visa applies to both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, but Zanzibar has a separate inbound insurance requirement for foreign visitors, excluding residents. Use the official insurance portal and review the current policy before travel.
Allow breathing room on arrival
Arrival formalities, luggage collection and road transfers take time. For a mountain trek, allow a pre-climb night and briefing. For a compact safari, arrive before the first safari day. Domestic connections and luggage allowances should be checked individually.
Travel requirements and local conditions can change. Reconfirm the details relevant to your journey before departure.
