5 Days Marangu Route

A five-day, hut-based Kilimanjaro itinerary returning along the Marangu trail. Consider the six-day option for an extra acclimatization day at Horombo.

A starting point for your custom trip

Marangu uses shared mountain huts rather than tented camps. This shorter schedule leaves less time to acclimatize: discuss a longer itinerary before choosing it simply to save a day.

Before choosing this route

The five-day schedule is not suitable for everyone and allows limited acclimatization time. Consider adding one or more ascent days; our six-day Marangu option adds a night at Horombo. Kilimanjaro is a demanding high-altitude trek. Fitness does not prevent altitude illness, and no route guarantees a summit. Discuss preparation with a qualified clinician, report symptoms promptly and follow your guide’s decisions about continuing or descending.

Day by day

A sample route, refined with you.

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate for registration, then walk through rainforest to Mandara Hut. Expect the possibility of wet, muddy paths; suitable boots, trekking poles and gaiters can help on slippery sections.

Day 2

Mandara to Horombo Hut

Leave the rainforest for heath and open moorland, with giant groundsels and changing views of Mawenzi and Kibo when visibility allows. Continue at a steady pace to Horombo Hut and prepare for colder temperatures.

Day 3

Horombo across the Saddle to Kibo Hut

Cross increasingly sparse, exposed terrain and the broad Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. At Kibo Hut, eat, rest and review the summit plan with your guide. Report altitude symptoms rather than pushing on to meet the schedule.

Day 4

Summit attempt via Gillman’s Point, then Horombo

Leave Kibo very early for a steep ascent toward Gillman’s Point on the crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres only if conditions and your health allow. Descend via Kibo for a rest, then continue to Horombo for the night. This is the route’s longest and most demanding day.

Day 5

Horombo via Mandara to Marangu Gate

Descend through moorland and forest, passing Mandara Hut on the way to the gate. Complete park exit formalities and transfer to Moshi for a rest. Build recovery time into your onward arrangements.

Your final proposal will confirm the exact route, accommodation, inclusions, and terms before you book.

The extra day is spent at Horombo, with rest or a suitable acclimatization walk agreed with your guide. It changes the itinerary to six mountain days and costs extra; no supplement has been confirmed. Ask for the full inclusion list, hotel arrangements, equipment requirements, crew gratuities and suitable insurance before booking. Distances and walking times vary; the guide will assess pace and conditions on the day.
