A starting point for your custom trip

A boma, or enkang in Maa, is a family homestead: houses built by women from poles, mud and cow dung, inside a thorn fence that protects the livestock at night. Visits are arranged with the community and fit easily into a safari day.

Arrival

Welcome to the boma

Meet your hosts, who may welcome you with song and dance. A member of the community explains the homestead and how daily life is organised around livestock.

The visit

Homes, herds and handwork

Step inside a house, learn how it is built and cared for, and hear about family roles, age groups and herding. Women’s beadwork is often available to buy directly.

Onward

Continue your journey

Visits usually last one to two hours, so you can continue to your lodge or the next park the same day.

Your proposal can include

  • Community visit fee
  • Local host and guide
  • Transfer within your safari route
  • Drinking water

Budget separately

  • Crafts and personal purchases
  • Tips
  • Park or conservation fees not already in your safari
  • Travel insurance

Your final proposal will confirm the exact route, accommodation, inclusions, and terms before you book.

Maasai life is not a show. Ask before photographing people, buy crafts directly from the makers and follow your hosts’ lead. The community and timing are confirmed in your proposal, usually close to your safari route.
