A starting point for your custom trip

The Hadzabe are one of the few communities in Africa where many people still live by hunting and gathering. Visits are arranged with local guides and the community, and begin at first light, when the day’s foraging starts.

Day by day

A sample route, refined with you.

Day 1

Karatu to Lake Eyasi

Drive from Karatu down to the Lake Eyasi area, south-west of Ngorongoro. In the afternoon, visit a Datoga family to see how they work recycled metal into arrowheads and jewellery. Overnight near the lake.

Day 2

First light with the Hadzabe

Set out before sunrise with a local guide to join a Hadzabe group as they hunt and gather. Walk at their pace, hear a language that uses click sounds, and learn about bows, tracking and making fire by hand. Return to Karatu or continue your safari.

Your proposal can include

  • Local guide and community visit fees
  • Vehicle and driver-guide
  • One night and meals as quoted
  • Drinking water

Budget separately

  • Accommodation before and after the visit
  • Tips and personal purchases
  • Travel insurance
  • Optional extra activities

Your final proposal will confirm the exact route, accommodation, inclusions, and terms before you book.

This is a visit to people’s home area, not a performance. Walking can be off-trail, in heat and thorny bush, so wear closed shoes. Ask before taking photographs, and expect every morning to be different: hunting is never staged or guaranteed. Easy to add before or after a Ngorongoro or Serengeti safari.
