Get to know Serengeti

The Serengeti is a varied landscape of grassland, woodland, river habitats and granite kopjes. Its seasonal migration is one reason to visit, but choosing the right area matters as much as choosing a month. A camp in the south and one near the Mara River create very different journeys.

When to visit

Southern plains are a usual focus January–March; central and western areas during the northward movement; northern Serengeti often July–October. Rainfall changes the pattern.

How much time to allow

For inspiration, allow at least three nights in a suitable area, with additional time for road transfers or a second region.

Good to know before you go

River crossings and specific sightings cannot be guaranteed. Northern camps are not a short drive from Ngorongoro. Fly-in options or extra overland days can make a compact itinerary more realistic.

Make it part of your journey

Ngorongoro works well when transfer time is built in. Add Zanzibar by air for a beach finish.
