Get to know Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro is a conservation area, not a national park. The crater is a distinct part of a much wider highland landscape. A visit can include a crater game drive, with accommodation and onward travel planned around the highlands.

When to visit

Visits are possible across the year, with seasonal changes in rainfall, vegetation and road conditions.

How much time to allow

A crater visit usually forms part of a longer safari. Allow one or two highland nights depending on your route.

Good to know before you go

Crater access is regulated. Your proposal should identify the crater visit, permits, overnight location and travel time. Wildlife sightings remain unpredictable.

Make it part of your journey

Combine with Tarangire and Serengeti, or spend longer in the highlands rather than adding another long drive.
